DESIGN: Swedish Rugs & A Conversation With Jason Nazmiyal

Life happens when you’re busy making other plans. The rush and swirl of to-do lists, endless news flashes – domestic and international, family gatherings and contemplation about taking that new job; everything playing out against the backdrop of your home and the important spaces of your life. There are very few constants. The need for a balanced, grounding energy can never be underestimated and sometimes from that backdrop something can rise up, as if a spotlight has been shown upon it and you see it with a renewed understanding, of not just its use but its purpose in your life.

In particular, are rugs. Walked upon, they define spaces that have no definition. They infuse color as much as any wall or window treatment, but go deeper than that, they weave a story from cotton blossoms and silk farmers to the fastidious fingers of weavers from Iran to Sweden, China to Morrocco, France to Israel. These artisans spend countless hours telling stories with each knot they make. Carrying on the generational traditions of those that came before them for hundreds of years. The history of rug making, and the trade routes is rich and iconic, turbulent and terrific. These very, real and tactile threads have woven themselves through time and find their way to your home. Babies taking their first steps, dancing barefoot on New Year’s Eve, catching the glittering glint of your diamond earring amongst the fibers that you dropped on your way out. Life happens here.

We had the opportunity to speak to one of the world’s most prominent vintage rug purveyors, Jason Nazmiyal, and get to know a little bit more about this fascinating subject.

Jason Nazmiyal

What led you to your career and how did you develop your love of vintage rugs?

You could say that my introduction to rugs was completely accidental. It was born out of the need to make a living and survive in America. I came to the US after the Iranian Revolution around 1980. With my brother and my cousin, we opened up a rug shop in Short Hills, NJ. We had no prior experience, but we were open to learning and growing every day. After our customer base grew larger, we expanded to Morristown, New Jersey, and later on to midtown Manhattan. Our business slowly expanded from supplying to dealers wholesale to providing rugs to private consumers and interior designers. For the past 10 years Nazmiyal has been at the No.1 spot nationally and internationally with more traffic than any other dealer.

You have begun releasing your Swedish Rug Collection to collectors. Is it new to your collection?

The Swedes are famous for their design sensibility since the emergence of mid-century modern design in the 1950’s. With emphasis on clean, streamlined aesthetics and minimalist silhouettes, Scandinavian design came to the forefront of the U.S. This surge in popularity was solidified when, in 1985, the first Ikea store opened in the U.S. Today, decades later, Swedish influences are a staple of modern design. One of the best ways to infuse some Scandinavian style into your home is by decorating it with modern Swedish rugs.

How are Swedish Rugs unique in the textile world?

Each rug is designed and crafted with its own unique set of principles. Nevertheless, few artisans maintain the same level of commitment to quality as Swedish rug-makers. It all comes down to the artistry, the materials used, the design and the longevity of these products. Bringing Swedish style really elevates a home’s overall design scheme and creates a look that’s modern and accessible. Scandinavian design blends simple, straightforward design elements and practical functionality. Scandinavian rugs are no exception. Along with the beautiful designs that you’ll find in Swedish rugs, you’ll also see evidence of unparalleled craftsmanship and impeccable design quality.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own collection?

The most important thing is to discover what you love, what really speaks to your heart. Follow your aesthetic instincts and choose the rugs that emotionally resonate with you. It is almost a conversation; the right piece will “speak” to you. Find a dealer you can trust. Establishing a relationship with a great professional is key. At Nazmiyal, we always take an education-oriented approach to the world of antique rugs and carpets. Take advantage of our resources, and let us make your carpet purchasing experience as pleasurable as possible.

Can you tell a lot about your client based on their choice of vintage rugs?

The trend among 30-40 year old’s, at the moment is to steer clear of antique rugs and mainly purchase vintage, modern pieces with unique character and depth of color. In fact, demand has been greater than ever for extraordinary, minimalist pieces from the 40s and 50s.

Your company also offers custom designed rugs. In general, how long does it take to create a custom piece?

It all depends on the size and complexity. For a 9×12 or 10×14 rug, after sample is approved and coloring options are set, it takes 4-6 months to complete.

You also work with important designers and businesses such as exclusive hotels. Which project have you enjoyed the most?

We are always working on exciting projects locally, nationally and internationally. We have provided superb rugs for castles in Italy, exquisite mansions worldwide… even a stunning 65000 sq. f. property in Naples, FL that kept us busy for a year. I love all our projects and I am always extremely dedicated and involved from beginning to end.

Which style of rugs are your favorite?

I am not moved by commercialism.  Only by timeless beauty and highest quality possible .We have more than 3000 extraordinary styles in our collections and they all have their own singular character, color-ways and harmony in design. I collect each piece with the same passion and love. Each one of the rugs and carpets in our collection is my favorite, really. I look for exquisite pieces with unique character that stand the test of time. I am especially drawn to primitive pieces with a lot of character. We have a great auction coming up in March and are very excited about the possibility of offering our audience fine, curated pieces for a fraction of the price. I have personally selected each of the pieces and it would give me great pleasure to have them adorn my customers’ spaces. Hope you can join us! How would you recommend someone care for such precious materials to keep them looking and feeling their best?

Rugs can last for hundreds of years, so it is important for one not to worry too much and really just enjoy having such magnificent pieces adorn one’s space. Treat your rug like your favorite sweater, clean any blemishes with water or club soda, and just allow its beauty to fully transform your room, home, office, etc. and elevate your daily life.
