DESIGN: A Conversation with Tobias Petri of Holzrausch

  • Written By: ALICIA KUNKEL

Known for their craftsmanship and modern restraint of design, Holzrausch has made a name for themselves far beyond Europe. The German interior design house was founded by Tobias Petri and Sven Petzold. With their own carpentry workshop in Forstern, in Bavaria, and an external production plant in Nižná in Slovakia, as well as the Holzrausch Interior Design Studio in Munich city center, they create each piece of design with the world class attention to detail that they are known for.

Clients choose Holzrausch for how deeply integrated into the design the entire team of craftsmen are and how the ethos of the brand is client-centric. We had the opportunity to chat with co-founder Tobias Petri, to discuss their unique approach to design.

Though each of your projects have their own voice, they all seem to have a quiet mindfulness about them. Is that something that you are intentional to provide to your clientele?

Before starting a new interior design project, we take the time to thoroughly understand our clients and the location where we will be working. Emphasizing the local context and addressing our customers’ desires is extremely important to us. The better we comprehend our clients’ needs, the more successful our projects become. Given the diversity of locations where we build and the unique nature of each client, our projects vary greatly. However, we always ensure that a sense of calm pervades our interior designs, and we strive for timelessness in our work. Each project is characterized by understated, natural designs combined with thoughtful, expertly crafted details and the use of high-quality, natural materials.

How long does it usually take to go from your vision to having a project completed?

HOLZRAUSCH: MALLORCA – FINCA SONRISA

This really depends on the size of the project and at what stage we are brought on board. However, in general, the process typically takes between 8 months and two years.

What is your biggest inspiration?

HOLZRAUSCH: MALLORCA – FINCA SONRISA

We draw much of our inspiration from travel. Additionally, European interior design fairs like Salone del Mobile in Milan or Three Days of Design in Copenhagen are essential events for us. At these fairs, we connect with many retailers, suppliers, and partners, and we consistently discover innovative ideas and companies.

What are your favorite materials to utilize in your designs?

HOLZRAUSCH: MALLORCA – FINCA SONRISA

One of our core principles is working with natural, authentic materials. That’s why we use a lot of solid wood and wood veneers, always finished with biological surface treatments. We also incorporate natural stone, for example, in flooring, kitchens, or bathrooms, and textiles for wall coverings or in master bedrooms. For walls and ceilings, we love collaborating with an Italian manufacturer that handcrafts clay plasters from natural materials.

Which project has been your favorite so far?

It’s difficult to choose just one, as we’ve had the pleasure of working on many incredible projects. However, one that brought us a great deal of joy was the renovation of an apartment on Fisher Island in Miami. The clients found us through internet research and were keen on combining European design with German craftsmanship. Through close collaboration with them, we created a unique space characterized by absolute restraint and craftsmanship perfection. This project resulted in a true Florida residence where the owners can unwind from the hectic pace of work. By using a select few high-quality natural materials, we crafted a space that beautifully showcases art. The furniture, interior decoration, and art pieces form a perfect symbiosis with the overall interior architecture.

Do you have any dream projects that you would like to do that you haven’t done yet?

We are currently in the process of designing the Branded Residences for two Six Senses projects. These homes are available for purchase, allowing buyers the option to either live in them or include them in the rental program through the affiliated Six Senses hotel. One project is located in the Austrian Alps, and the other in the French Loire Valley. Although the design concepts are quite distinct due to the different locations, both projects showcase the signature Holzrausch interior design DNA, characterized by natural materials and high-quality craftsmanship.

Do you have any design tips for anyone trying to create a beautiful space?

HOLZRAUSCH: ITALY – CASA MORELLI

I strongly advise every private homeowner to seek the support of an interior designer to collaborate with. It’s essential to find a partner who listens to you and works closely with you to create a space that truly reflects your needs. In private residences, we believe that a close collaboration with the future residents is especially important. When you find a partner who understands how you want to live and takes the time to uncover that vision, your project will become highly individual and personal.

Are there any upcoming projects that you are excited about?

HOLZRAUSCH: ITALY – CASA MORELLI

We are currently working on the restoration of a historic villa and a former stable building in the hills of Tuscany. This project will transform the property into a luxurious, modern, and timeless Bed & Breakfast with nine bedrooms, each featuring an ensuite bathroom, set on a stunning estate. This project is set to be a standout in the region, as we are restoring historical elements like ceiling frescoes and juxtaposing them with very modern furnishings, bathrooms, and kitchens. The garden is being completely redesigned, and we are adding a fantastic new pool with breathtaking views of the Chianti hills. Starting in 2026, this estate will be available for weekly rentals.
