New York based hospitality design atelier Tihany Design, has explored new boundaries of a true flexible space in their latest design, the Zanotta House. Is it a showroom? Residence? Event Space? The famous 23 Cornelia Street brownstone featuring an extremely rare private NYC indoor swimming pool, previously owned by singing legend Taylor Swift and inspiration for the 2019 song entitled “Cornelia Street”, has experienced a metamorphosis under the watchful eye if the managing partner, Alessia Genova, to become ‘A Space To Celebrate Relationships’. Evolution of use, designed to fit every need. A meeting place that embraces people, stories, cultures, passions, skills and experiences. Crafted for fluidity.
We had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Genova to learn more about this unique concept space.
Why did you choose 23 Cornelia Street to be the home of Zanotta House?
I did not pick the location. Zanotta chose the landmark location for its blend of indoor and outdoor environments, which lend to new interpretations of domestic and collective spaces. The blended layout has allowed the extension of my design outside for continuous communication and exchange with the city.
Did you have to do a lot of renovations for it to fit your vision for Zanotta House?
Some of the renovations were already in place but being a townhouse you can’t really change the DNA of the house. The vision of Zanotta and the uniqueness of their catalog is the ability to ensure that their collection can fit in diverse places, and this is what I worked with.
A “modern metropolitan muse” was used as inspiration for the design decoration of the home. Was there a particular woman that you thought of when you envisioned the space?
A New Yorker, a traveler of the world, a collector of art and design pieces, an art lover, a fashionista with unique Italian style – chic, elegant and eclectic at the same time.
Which room is your favorite?
It is difficult to say as every corner of the house has something unique and special. However, it surely is a dream if you could wake up in that magical master bedroom, feeling the air and the smell of the flowers adorning the private outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a cappuccino and croissant while having a relaxing time reading.
Will there be other Zanotta House’s in the future?
I don’t know, but I hope the success of this one will encourage additional openings.
Will the Tihany Design team mostly use this flexible concept space or will it be available for others to host in?
Zanotta House New York is not a showroom nor a boutique apartment; instead, it is a living experience created to explore the interactions of people and products in today’s evolving home.
As such, Zanotta House New York seeks to celebrate, communicate, intrigue, and become an eye-catching cultural space for the design community to come together in dialogue about the future of residential design. The house will welcome clients, architects, and designers by appointment, offering an oasis for a private meeting, a business breakfast, a presentation, or an overnight stay. On other occasions, the house will host public events, art exhibitions, performances, opening up to different audiences (university, culture, and art) to connect with diverse communities in mutual enrichment.
There is a strong art element found throughout the property. Did you work with any particular artists or galleries to choose the pieces?
All the artworks displayed are part of Art of the World, one of Los Angeles’ most significant contemporary collections. Among the works chosen are internationally renowned artists such as Mr. Brainwash, the famous French street and pop artist.
What does the Zanotta House mean in the evolution of the Tihany Design story?
Zanotta House was partially something new for us, a project in which I was personally involved. I think the project shows a new direction we are taking – in terms of design as well as the project type. It expresses our abilities to create beautiful and charming luxury apartments and expands our vision outside the hospitality world with a new and fresh approach as well as design sensibility.
